A Letter to Zane.

Happy (belated) 33rd Birthday son.

                                                                         "This is US"

Dear Zane,

I apologise for posting this late but it was intentional as I had gone for a 10-day Vipassana Meditation Retreat somewhere in the rainforests of Pahang. Those ten days of physical and digital detox with no devices, no books, no writing, no talking, started on 15 Oct. ended on the 26th. I have had a most amazing, life changing experience, uplifting my sanity many notches and it is on this note that I would like to address you.

You know son, over the years, I have been watching you in silent admiration, rooting for you, celebrating with you, delighting in your successes and conquests. I am so proud of what I have seen in your achievements thus far. The more I see the joy on your face and in your demeanor, the more I am happy to be out of the orbit of your life. After all, I have consoled myself that, most of all I have to impart to you as father to son, I have already done so, for better or for worse. The rest was up to you and you have done well. And that is just the beginning.

Remember to play the long game, anyone can start but it takes commitment and endurance to succeed. But then you already know that-it's etched into your arm as your first tattoo. I’m not about to give you advice and neither did my father give me any advice (although I wished he had) but all I want to say is; spend some quiet time (start with 10 mins) with yourself in silence and solitude everyday. That’s all.

Happy Birthday dude.

Be Well. Be Happy.

With love;

Papa xx

Dear Summer,

All offsprings are gems and crowning glory of our lives.

Our family's blessings came in delightful bundles of joy in quick succession. The ending of the twentieth century brought us great bounty and gifts from the divine.

Being the youngest and a precious baby girl at that, you came with special blessings right from the day you were born.

" To be a constant source of light & joy for all of us completing the circle that would bind us all together forever."

It’s been three decades since and I think I know that you’re still the constant source of light and joy for the family. And I.

I can’t imagine how you look right now but I surmise you look no different from when you were 21? And you will forever be 21 in my eyes and in my heart. That was the day when I saw how you’ve grown into a confident, capable, independent, and compassionate young woman on your 21st birthday party.

It is one of the most memorable moments in my life. Seeing how you so maturely gave-in to your uncontrollably ‘proud’ father (who insisted on a blindfold gambit) & then you nicely wrapped it up in a poised delivery of your birthday speech. Everyone present was convinced you had come of age then. Especially me.

Along with all the many birthdays we celebrated with you and all the birthdays we celebrated for Jon, Zane and Mum. I’m glad I had my fair share of precious & beautiful memories of and with you, on your birthdays as well as your brothers and mother. I must say that I truly enjoyed fatherhood.  It was more than I could ever wish for, but birthdays are just that, another excuse to celebrate this ephemeral life and if for any reason that we are unable to meet again, remember to celebrate life every chance you get, I would have no regrets, I have had many beautiful & precious memories of you, with you as well as the whole family to last several lifetimes & beyond.

I just want to wish you a Happy Birthday filled with happiness and wellness always.

I celebrate you each time I think of you. Always light & joy.

With Love;

Pxxa

Mid-Year Stock Take - Letter to Jon at 35

Mushroom cloud over Nagasaki 9 Aug.1945

Dear Jon,

Here we are, just breaching the second half of the 25th year of the 21st century. Also breaching the 35th year of your birth to your departure on August 9th.

Admittedly, I have discovered more things about today as time progresses. It's perhaps of our fixation on birthdays that we overlook departure days. It has taken me nineteen years to realise more facts about August 9;

Apart from being Singapore's national day, and that it's exactly two weeks or 15 days after your birthday,

it was also the devastation of Nagasaki when the US dropped a second nuclear bomb to unofficially and brutally end the war.

It’s been a year since I last shared endings and beginnings with you. It was the beginning of the 2024 Paris Olympics ending around your departure date leaving the world relatively safe and peaceful.

Fast forward one year, this post is a sort of report card of where the human race is at.

1. The human race has never been so comfortable, peaceful and empowered in their daily lives.

2. Things could get worse.

3. Things could get really bad.

We live in a material world. We do all that matters in search of better lives chasing dreams in a society that has provided the best in healthcare, food, living conveniences, economic and technological advances are unprecedented yet we’re on the verge of self- destruction.

There is a serious trust deficit growing amongst us since the end of the cold war. From relationships to families, communities and nations. Most people in the civilised world are living ultra comfortable lives yet not happier but more anxious desiring more of everything material that we think will make us happier. Be it entertainment, food, sex, possessions or anything that provides distractions from ourselves.

The endless scrolling of screens be it the mobile devices as an extension of our hands or the large screens as extensions of our living rooms, searching for news and useless information so we can feel-better. That’s not what happiness looks like.

As if not serious enough, we are heralding the dawn of Ai, arguably mankind's greatest technological achievement, coming into the mix. Although the possibilities are positively game changing, the dangers of misuse by bad actors using Ai to plot world domination, loom ominous.

Not withstanding Ai, the madness is already upon us. Israel is carrying out a systemic genocide on the Palestinians since October 2023. As if mad with bloodlust they have started wars with Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen with the aid of their lackey the US and no end in sight..

It is a slow and painful genocide in Palestine. The Israelis are deliberately starving women & children and mindless wars are being waged in the Middle East that could escalate into another nuclear third world war.

One would think that after Hitler’s Germany, Mussolini’s Italy & the Japanese defeat in the Second World War would have taught us the futility of war but apparently not. It has been exactly 80 years since the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuked by the US ending the war but more wars are being waged around the world today instigated or led by the US.

Isn’t it ironic, that the liberators of the free world from the horrors of the Second World War has been the sole peddler of wars ever since? It seems that the most powerful nation on earth is hell bent on destroying it. America has been entrusted to lead and police the world and they have done so with impunity. The age old adage still rings true; 'Who is going to police the police?'

These realities come to light when Donald Trump won a second term in the White House. A convicted felon managed to win a landslide victory beating the democrats whose last term was disastrous even irresponsible. Democrats or Republicans, America's politics have, from the onset, been divisive- "Either you're on my side or you're against me." This is nothing new as Americans have subscribed even invented this form of 'game theory' for decades against it's own people as well as the rest of the world. The world's largest human lab has in turn, turned the world into it's own human lab- bringing it's own ideology of governance or justice to all, inflicting chaos and destruction everywhere they choose. The only diplomacy they know is through force or coercion. Donald Trump is no different from his predecessors.

"When all you have is a hammer, every challenge you face becomes a nail to be hammered out."

The only difference is that Trump is not a career politician but a 'businessman' and hopefully he can begin to see that business can only be done with mutual transfer of value benefitting both sides leading to a multi-lateral world, not one of domination by a facist regime. In fact, America is known to be a plutocracy (ruled by the rich 1%) or even kleptocracy (ruled by thieves) and the only reason they can be that is that they wield the biggest hammer.

However, with the inevitable rise of China after a century of humiliation, there is a new world leader in the making. Compared to four thousand years of civilisation, it took only a century of humiliation to put order to the chaos largely brought upon themselves, tranquilised by the comforts of the spoils of internal warfare and imperial rule handed down through the dynasties. Starting with the end of the Qing Dynasty, China bade farewell to it's last emperor Puyi and the Chinese Communist Party won complete victory in the Chinese Civil War and the People's Republic of China was founded in August 1950.

So in a sort of a roundabout way, I have briefly but more importantly recounted the journey and establishment of a world power worthy and capable of standing up to the US in the delicate balance of power as to who holds the bigger hammer, be it in military strength or Ai advancement to rule the world.

I often wonder what we wouldn't talk about son.

Happy 35th Birthday Jon.

Of Birthdays & Gifts

 It's my Birthday.

Grok made a lux chocolate cake made of butter & cashew nut for me.

Yes. I am celebrating another birthday today. Mine. I'm grateful to have had so many that I'm beginning to forget the numbers. At this stage of my life, it seems to me that apart from birthdays, I'm trying to keep up with Christmas, followed by Gregorian New Year, then Chinese New Year with birthdays to be endured in between let alone celebrated. That's mainly because birthdays are more personal hence a solitary venture seen as a minor inconvenience by many. Unless you have family close by.

But then I've always subscribed to the adage; 'Age is nothing but a number.' And you get to pick it. Nobody cares.

So I shall conveniently forget my age. If anybody must really know it's pegged at 58. That's half a lie of course but since the concept of age is already one big lie, we might as well joyfully participate in this illusion. 58 is my birth year.

Birthdays come and go. The more we have them the longer we live. I highly recommend them.

However, as long as I still have birthdays, I will hold fast to the words my mother often times tell me;

"As long as we're happy, everyday can be our birthday." - Abu

I have gifts.

With Birthdays, traditionally come gifts. And gifts are quite another kettle of fish altogether.

It has been said that it is nobler to give than to receive. I cannot find fault in that saying. Neither do I intend to find fault with the giver given that it's the thought that counts when it comes to gifting.

However I also think that being on the receiving end is a much nobler privilege as the receiver gets to truly discover who truly are the people that truly put thought into acquiring a present for us or even know us. Deeply and intimately.

I have received a few gifts in my life and there are many delightful gifts that are too many to recall but I believe that best test for the longevity, durability hence the likability of the gifts I received is the measure of the gifts I still have around me, in my possession, such that I get to see them and be near them, enjoy them, admire or use them.

I scan the living room, bedroom, guest room, kitchen, storeroom and I see the most significant gifts I have received and kept have all appealed to my innermost self beyond self. They have been painstakingly picked or made by only one person whom I admire, respect, cherish, treasure and love. The person who has spent over 3 decades taking care of me and gifting me with treasures I never dreamt possible. Best of all: our three wonderful children. I have all these great treasures for as long as I live.

The person about whom I used to lament at the illusion that she doesn't know me at all.

How wrong I was. How lost and delusional I was.

But I know now. I know now.

I hope she knows that I know.

And that I'm remembering her on my birthday.

And if birthdays are about gifts I want her to know she has already given me the best gifts I have ever wanted.

Thank you.

I love you. HB Zane.

Today is my son’s birthday. A son. A good son.

Performance machines with style

What makes a good son?

A person who is kind and considerate.

A person who is fearless.

A responsible person.

A caring person.

A person who constantly looks out for his loved ones, his friends, and whoever he cares to look out for.

A person who does the right thing whenever and wherever.

But Good Sons are aplenty in this world.

When a good son becomes your best friend, now that’s special. Really special.

And that’s what my son is to me. My best friend.

What makes a best friend?

A person who spend time with you no matter where or when.

A person who reaches out to you ever so often just because.

A person you’re not afraid to be naked with in body and soul.

A person who you can be totally honest and share feelings with.

A person who you can get sloshed or stoned out of your mind with.

A person who will hang out and wait around for you while you do silly things, running around looking for antiquities, experiences or an expedition to absurd places like Cupertino. Or to patiently be present while you slowly squander time in museums & art galleries.

A person who shares your taste in music and food.

A person who inspires everyone in his life by setting standards that lifts everyone and everything around him.

An artist who is kind and compassionate with people yet strict and stoic with himself in maintaining astronomical aspirations in his craft.

Such a person is rare. And that person brightens up everyone’s life.

What joy it is to have a good son as well as a best friend.

Happy Birthday My Son. My Best Friend.

What you do inspires me to no end.

Since you were little you were a bright happy spark reaching for the stars.

That’s where you are from and what you’re made of. Stars and Stardust.

You can be anything you want to be.

But you already know that.

Proud and so happy for you. My Man.

Life's like that.

Here’s a song I have been waiting and yet to dedicate to someone. I am so happy I get to dedicate this song to you.

Just know that the music you’ve appreciated and shared with me keeps me company for many nights on my balcony. And tonight I’ll be partying like never before to all the music we love and share.

Queen kicked off tonight’s party. My favourite rock band which I’m sure is one of yours.

Here's one more...

Enjoy your day & everyday son.

I love you. HB Summer Gan

To my daughter on her birthday.

Happy Birthday Summer

May You Be Well, May You Be Happy. Always.

Photo by Ahmad Odeh on Unsplash

My daughter taught me many things.

Here are just some of them;

1. We are born dancers.

The human body has 202 bones connected by 360 joints. Doesn’t this tell us that we should be moving a lot? Shouldn’t we all be dancing?

Often reminded of this fact I dance like no one is watching every time I get a chance or when the music moves me.

2. Dancers are the most meticulous thinkers.

They have to remember every single move in a dance routine down to that intricate little gesture. A dance routine can last from 3 to 30 minutes and more. Imagine how many moves, steps and little details a dancer needs to remember performing on stage. Some of us can’t even remember 10 things to save our lives.

I have been so intrigued by this truth that I am excited yet intimidated at the prospect of having a conversation with a dancer. After all how does one interact with a genius?

3. Some dancers can sing and act.

They're called “triple threat.” Accomplished dancers, actors and singers can do all three.

These people are truly gifted and talented to be able to sing, dance and act at the same time. Imagine the complexities of memorising the script, lyrics and moves required in a scene let alone an entire show or movie! That's how movie or film stars are made.

What type of work could be more demanding yet so fulfilling to all?

I can’t think of any.

Aren’t they then the most perfect humans on the planet with talent, poise and compassion?

Aren't they artists who do insane things with great beauty to delight us and keep us sane?

I have a good feeling that my daughter is doing well in her chosen path in life.

Having balanced her emotions carefully, she has embarked upon her professional career in full flight.

Whatever multiple roles she is pursuing I would just like to stand by the wayside and cheer her on, on her birthday.

1. You are enough. Ten thousand times enough.

You have everything it takes to do whatever you are doing and more. You know it deep down.

Keep going no matter how hard or easy it gets. You’re on track to greatness. Believe it.

2.  You have great focus.

Whatever you choose to focus on you will excel. You have done it many times before.

Your single minded focus has won you many medals. Keep going. Our ceiling is your floor.

3. You have great compassion.

It is embedded deep in your heart- more than passion, you have compassion. It is what differentiates great from good. When you do things with compassion you can’t help but to move people.

Keep going. The world need great artists with sensitive hearts.

Remember you have come so far all on your own.

Know that I think about you constantly and that I hope you get to spend quiet time with your inner self through deep contemplation or meditation. I hope you do it daily.

With love.

Pxxx.

I love you. Jon's 33rd.

Dear Jon,

I have a confession to make.

I had planned a reunion of sorts on your birthday because I was stumped about what to post for your 33rd. So an event or a meaningful meeting would definitely give me something to write about.

On Monday I texted a certain someone whom I've not seen in a long time asking her to join me for a cup of coffee on Wednesday. It didn't happen.
I also scheduled a much needed, long awaited dentist appointment late in the afternoon on Wednesday.
That didn't happen either. My dentist had an emergency.

So there I was at two minutes past two wondering what to do, seeing the futility in plans 'of mice & men.' My phone rang almost immediately. It was my dear techie friend AL asking if I wanted coffee. The universe works in mysterious ways I mused. Yes! I replied almost immediately.
AL swung by in less than 20 minutes whisking me away to the deep recesses of Old Klang Road to a hipster coffee joint serving bagels with cream cheese and spicy potato wedges washed down with gula melaka latte. We sat in the small converted link house enjoying the fare while young local Chinese baristas hustle about the cafe in their oversized t-shirts tucked into tight high-waisted jeans. They seem to be doing fine especially the resident cat. After a healthy dose of single origin African coffee and conversation we left for another new coffee joint in Sect. 14 PJ but it was closed.

Cafe' Cat by PineForest

So we went to a nearby cafe restaurant owned and run by a friend named Jonathan. Having visited him several times before I could see he wasn't his usual self. He looked depressed, and troubled by business woes. Ever since the post-covid recovery phase, Jon has been struggling to make a living to support his young family and in the past few months business has gotten worse at his cafe at Jaya Shopping Center.
I tried the standard blanket statement of 'all of us are also suffering bro' but I didn't think he bought it.
In fact he confessed that in the mornings before he opens his restaurant, he'd sit in the dark pondering the fate of his business, and that of his family, driving him to the brink of a breakdown.

Here is a man who has had the courage to strike out to practice his craft of creative cooking but circumstances seem too overwhelming to endure. It seems that he was beginning to entertain all thoughts of abandonment and resignation in search of employment.
I have often wondered how people in business are coping with the post-pandemic fallout. Now I am getting the answers as if in search of stories to mirror my own. The only difference is that I don't have the yoke of a young family to weigh me down or spur me on. Either way, suffer we must.
Ponder, reflect, contemplate day and night in solitude we must, until we come face to face with our predicament. And maybe if we are patient enough, we will find the answers we seek in ourselves.

We sat with Jon a long while, listening to his plans pre and post-covid and as he talked us through, it seemed he had a couple of viable options available for him to decide his next steps. We left him feeling and looking much more cheerful than we found him even though he refused to join us for dinner at the newly opened Chinese Muslim Mee Tarek and Mee Hiris Restaurant downstairs.

So looking at what has unfolded today, if I were to have a man to man talk with Jon the cafe owner, I wouldn't know how to tell him what I think he needed to know in a way he'd understand because it would tantamount to preaching and enter the realm of meta physics.
Hence I just sat there listening and holding space for that young man to vent.

However, if it was you Jonathan, my son in a similar situation, I would probably say these to you;

1. Survival is not a problem. Live.

As long as we are willing to adapt, we can survive under any condition.
If we are used to eating five meals a day, cut it down to two. This will reveal our eating habits are just that - habits we have gotten used to unnecessarily over feed our bodies even though we are not hungry. Our body will thank us for not over burdening the system.

2. The mind is and always will be our enemy. Be mindful.

Most problems only exist in our minds. We just have to remind ourselves that every problem has a solution as long as we are willing to face them. When we do that we begin to see that things aren't as bad as we imagined. But the mind's primary job is to think and even overthink incessantly. Our job is to control the mind and use it to serve us and not the other way around. To do that, we have to be mindful. To focus on our breath that will bring us to the present moment. To stay in the present is to focus on everyone and everything around us because this is the only reality that exist, right now. So by constantly being here now, will silence the mind and lessen the endless chatter.

3. Fear does not exist. Live exuberantly.

When we're fully present, we begin to realise that fear has no place to dwell in our being. Fear is what we encounter when we lose unity with the present moment. Our mind then dwells in the past or gets anxious about the future.

4. Everything is temporary, ephemeral, transitional.

All that is subject to arising is subject to ceasing. the Buddha said. That is a universal, scientific truth.
No matter what we are going through, whether it be a joyous situation or a negative one, it will pass.
After the winter, comes spring. It's only natural hence irrefutable.

And sure enough the sun will come shining through.
If it's not shining yet, keep going, singing in the rain, soon there will be laughter in the rain or sunshine.

Well Jon, this is your post. The message is that I see you, us in every young man especially the ones named Jonathan. Just like you he's talented and hardworking. And I know just like you, he'll be fine.

Happy 33rd Dude.

P/s. I've chosen a song by my childhood crush for your birthday soire'. She's a Hawaiian hottie.

I love you. 65

Reality or Science Fiction? Or just a rant.

Pohon Beringin*by PineForest

I am quite sure nobody remembers what actually happens on one's birthday. Or is it just me? Who is not so big on birthdays.

My mother always used to say; "If you're happy everyday, everyday is your birthday." Having said that; she'd still cook meesua soup with hard boiled eggs for me on my birthday. Thanks Abu.

Be that as it may, I'm going to remember this one.

On the night before, having gone to bed only at the wee hours, after the usual sojourn on my easy chair perched on my balcony, I finally drifted off to sleep as Alan Watts droned on my Spotify app. I find his talks very soothing if not tranquilizing, especially on the subjects of polarity and psychedelics.

I woke up just after eight to the sound of my phone ringing. A brother from another mother rang to shout greetings in my ear, seems like from a script that alluded to brotherly love, long life, happiness, joy and weed. Interestingly enough, I have spent more time with brother JB than any other person over the last few years. Hence it is no surprise why I had earlier texted him expressing my desire to spend today with him to 'jalan-jalan cari makan'. Unfortunately for me, he's away on a job in the north. Insyallah we meet next week when he returns.

Well, it seems that I have made it to 65, 15 years after 50 and 5 years after 60.

Both occasions were celebrated with a grand party. The first, a surprise party thrown by my family and my colleagues (master-minded by my ex-wife) when I hit 51. I wasn't in the mood to celebrate but I was blown-away with the gift of an exquisite memorial book that never fails to bring tears to my eyes each time I turn the pages.

When I hit 60, I splurged on a big Hollywood-themed party that felt as dramatic and as strange as a Hollywood script. On hindsight it turned out to be a farewell party for my closest and dearest. I left my home and my family that year. That brought tears to my eyes too.

Am I wallowing in self pity and remorse right now?

I wouldn't be writing to commemorate this day if I were. I am writing because I have not felt this good in as many years. At least not that I can recall. Nor can I recall a more painful journey.

Perhaps the best way to mark this milestone is to list the 10 things I learnt under it.

And call it - What I know now at 65.

1. Life is to be enjoyed in-between the gaps of sorrow that will engulf us.

The secret is to live it fully, regardless. We are playing a game of hide and seek with ourselves here. In the end nothing really matters. We staged all this so that we can experience ourselves in this life. We came here as a Persona. Hence Person. The definition of which is Greek for a mask. A mask from which we put on a front/facade with an open mouthpiece that amplifies our voice to an open theatre. Latin verb per-sonare, literally sounding through.

Because we so cleverly staged this life, we also cleverly caused ourselves to forget this staging. After all where's the fun in playing games where we already know the outcomes? And one thing is for sure, woman/mankind love to play games and be entertained. The more challenging, the more real, the more brutal, the more heartbreaking, the better. Or else what else is there to do? Even falling in love and making babies these days are falling out of favour but the constant consumption of stories continues.

The stories begin with the self. Our body, our possessions, our feelings and our beliefs. As the world gets smaller our lives intertwine with others and engage with the world at large. The players, including ourselves, play our parts so well that soon we buy into the stories whole-heartedly. We get entangled in the drama and we get deeply attached to the passions, possessions and people in our lives. With deep attachments we get disappointed, dissatisfied and disillusioned. Pain and suffering follow inevitably.

Remember, it's all a play. The sooner we wise up the better the play.

2. We look in all the wrong places.

Then the search for meaning and purpose of life begins. We look for other passions, possessions, and people thinking they may be the answer. We get to soothe ourselves again momentarily. But they're just temporary, soon the same cycle of pain and suffering resurfaces and we sink further into destitute, desperation and depression. We resort to medicating our pain with alcohol, drugs, shopping or other therapies but nothing on this road can bring us lasting relief. Sounds familiar? That's pretty much where the human race is at.

The good news is the search for meaning and purpose continues. Because deep down, we know, we just know that, there is something we have to remember about ourselves..

Remember, it's all Maya. An illusion. Wise up.

3. This life is not about me. It is about ALL of us.

Life is certainly very seductive. One cannot be faulted if one falls heavily infatuated with it, or worse head over heels in search of pleasure. It isn't and it shouldn't be about pleasure. At least not in the way Hollywood portrayed it to be. As much as I abhor isn'ts, wouldn'ts and shouldn'ts, the pursuit of pleasure is not prohibited. But I have discovered that pleasure comes with it's inseparable terrible twin called pain. Pursue pleasure by all means, but be prepared to face the pain that comes with it. It's guaranteed.

But I for one has been brought up on the concept of pleasure and I intend to live in pleasure whenever I can. Pleasure in this respect as defined by the stoics;

"The absence of pain in the body and of trouble in the soul." ~ Epicurus

Whatever your religious inclinations, beliefs, ideologies, philosophies, or superstitions, this is mine;

I know deep down, we all come from the same place, the same source. The universe is conscious. How do I know? Because I am conscious. Conscious of the fact that, just like Copernicus and Galileo discovered, the sun doesn't revolve around our earth. Our Sun, one of many suns in our galaxy, one of many galaxies in our universe, keeps our solar system in place with Mercury in first, Jupiter in fifth is our largest planet. It is our sun's gravity that pulls the planets in our solar system together to revolve around it. Much like how electrons revolve around protons. By design, the configuration of atoms that make up our body is almost identical to our solar system. It is no coincidence that we are designed and configured as such. It is a universal spirit, tao, energy, god or brahman that unites us. We are ONE.

Remember, we are ALL in on this charade. The ONE playing all the roles.

4. The answer lies within us.

Our knowledge of outer space, however minuscule, serves little to satisfy our curiosity about the immensity that surrounds us day and night. The empty space that we gaze out upon, seem to be full of 'nothing'. Is it really just nothing? Or can only something come out of nothing? That idea can only be understood when we explore inner space which we know so little about compared to outer space.

Inner space has two parts- the first is physical space on our planet, our own backyard, our forests, rivers, seas and oceans. We seem to know more about the other planets than our own planet. That's because the powers that can afford to do this has conquest driven by ego on their agenda. This line of thinking pretty much defines the relationship we humans have with the cosmos including nature, they are to be conquered and controlled. Hence the fight with nature and the conquest of outer space.

Second, there's the inner space within us. That space some would call our higher self, inner being or just our consciousness. This is the space that is the most important but least visited hence least known- ourselves. This is our 95%.

Remember, we are connected to a higher eternal source.

5. Who Am I?

Who we truly are or Who am I? is the question that is as old as the existence of the human race. Yet it remains the current question that confronts all generations. It is one of the most confounding and perplexing questions that has ever riddled humankind. Perhaps because the answers are difficult to find or perhaps the answers we have on hand are difficult to comprehend, we turn to seek external answers from religion, science or philosophy. Having found, read, listened to thinkers, writers, philosophers like David Friedrich Strauss, Ludwig Feuerbach, Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, Friedrich Neitzsche, Jean Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. These sages paved the way for nihilism, existentialism and absurdism, they killed God and triggered the search for life's meaning and purpose.

The better question to contemplate and query; Who Am I? The answer is... see #4.

6. Nature is separate from us. (?)

Therefore it has to be conquered and controlled. Hence the destruction of the rainforests and flattening of the earth to build steel and concrete cities and communities with little regard to nature.

Results show that this belief is not only not working but it is threatening all lives on the planet. Science tells us that we inhale oxygen produced by plants and trees through photosynthesis which uses the carbon dioxide we and other animal lifeforms produce as waste. Isn't that already a miracle of life? A symbiotic relationship in action.

There is so much we don't know about nature and the life that surrounds us. Science- originally known as Philosophical Studies was the pursuit and search for the truth. The philosophers were our first scientists. Truths and theories were already discovered since the days of Socrates, Copernicus and Galileo. Then it became institutionalised and politicised from as far back as time in memorial.

Nature is not separate from us humans. We are part of nature just as stars are part of the sky. Nature is intelligent, nature has immense power, nature is god. We come from nature. Therefore when we destroy nature we destroy ourselves.

ALL of us are guilty of this. This is a note to self #nts.

7. Mankind is a superior being created by god separate from all other forms of creation.

Some forms of man is even more superior to other forms of man. Therefore some people see it fit to impose their will upon others. By force when the others refuse to succumb to their demands. Hence the propagation of wars and conquest of people and nations in the name of god, righteousness, threats, suspicions of threats, fabrication of threats, with no regard to the suffering imposed upon the lives of innocent human beings.

Again, the slaughter of fellow humans come with great ease and little remorse amongst us. Nothing seems to have changed since the beginning of civilisation. As I write this, major conflicts and wars are still being propagated in Asia, Europe, South America and Africa.

Remember Socrates was sentenced to death by the Athenian court, Jesus was killed by his own people, the Jews, Copernicus and Gallileo were branded heretics by the catholic Church, Gandhi was murdered by an Indian, and JFK was assassinated by a white American. What were their sins? All of them had only one thing in common, they discovered, spoke and stood for the truth. Now didn't Jesus say that, "the truth shall set you free?" but obviously not for these blokes. And more evidently; all of them had the support of the masses.

So if man can turn on itself with such ferocity and self righteousness, what hope do 'lesser' beings or organisms have?

Good and Evil is the inseparable duality within the singularity.

8. The earth, nature, we, are all doomed to destruction and extinction.

Seems that way however all is not doom and gloom when we consider this generation of humans as the most comfortable, convenience-empowered and most informed about almost everything everywhere.

Thanks to technology, which is a by-product of science in the pursuit of the conquest and control of space, nature and nations, we get to enjoy high speed internet connections enabling more bandwidth for multiple layers of interactions to better living in the comfort of wherever we are.

Jack Kilby, (and Robert Noyce) in 1958, invented the integrated circuit or microchip at Texas Instrument, they had no idea this creation would change the world with information. Later Noyce together with Gordon Moore founded Intel to work on the production of semiconductor memory chips which became Intel's first big commercial success. They worked on improving the integrated circuit and microprocessor which led to a law bearing Moore's name postulating that the number of transistors on a single chip will double every 18 months to 2 years. This exponential law prophesized in1965 is still delivering. The microchip today has shrunk to an invisible 2 nanometers (nm) housing an incredible 60 billion transistors. A single strand of human hair is 100nm in diameter. As I write this, IBM has this latest capability in store.

The microchip will be the world's most affordable commodity, it will be cheaper than scrap paper. Soon everyone will be wearing contact lenses infused with microchips storing and accessing information tethered to the www. In just a blink, information is presented in our sight in real time.

Artificial intelligence will grow body parts, organs, bones, skin, tissue from our bodies. At the risk of this post sounding like a science fiction novella, it is highly likely that I get to see the human body regenerate itself and even reverse ageing in this lifetime. As much as the new technology and AI sounds inspiring, it is also frightening.

Humans have evolved with environmental factors. We are already cyborgs in the making.

9. What will become of us?

Machine learning and AI will be so advanced that perhaps it is inevitable that they take over. The rise of the machines seems plausible now as it was mooted since the science fiction days of Asimov, Clarke and Wells.

In 1997, the world's greatest player of chess, Gary Kasparov, was defeated by the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue in a highly publicised match. He then described the loss akin to playing against sheer brute force.

Then in 2016, the ancient Chinese game of Go widely played in China, South Korea and Japan, succumbed to Google's DeepMind AlphaGo program. Go was considered a more complex game than Chess with far more possible moves which requires more intuition and is far less susceptible to brute force. The unthinkable happened. The machine beat top-ranked Lee Sedol in a game where the number of legal board positions has been calculated to be approximately 2.1 x 10170 which is far greater than the number of atoms in the observable universe, estimated to be of the order 1080 (read as ten to the power of eighty).

While DeepBlue relied on brute computational force to evaluate millions of positions, AlphaGo relied on neural networks and reinforcement learning. See the thrilling award-winning documentary >HERE

The machines have arrived, the gradient of exponential doubling of transistors on a microchip has metastasized into a wall. A wall of unstoppable brute force propelling mankind into a super bright future or condemning us to a dark world where we become slaves to the machines. Gordon Moore's vision of exponential growth has been realised much like the evolution of the species that started with a single-cell organism.

It appears we have come full circle.

10. What do we do?

We should keep on doing what we have been doing or have been trying to do for the longest time. Nothing.

Let's face it, we have basically been doing nothing. Except when the life as we know it, tries to tell us to get busy doing things that don't make sense or even matter. These so called 'things' that we were told or told to do by our parents, teachers, preachers, bosses, the system were useful only to the extent of merely surviving as humans. The great potential, found in the 'being' equation of 'human beings' was left largely unaddressed, needs to be seriously addressed. After all, we are human beings not human doings.

Perhaps now, with the rise of the machines we are compelled to face, meet, confront our being to discover who we really are.

There has never been a better time than now to sit and do nothing while the machines do all our non-essential work that doesn't require our own special creativity, taste, feelings or emotions.

We sit in stillness to connect with our divine nature tapping into the unlimited realm of endless possibilities.

Here is the search for meaning and purpose.

Here is where we bestow meaning and purpose in our lives to pursue our hearts desires.

Here is when we create our art to share with the world.

Here is where we ask the difficult question of; Who am I?

And here is where we start to tell our stories from our hearts, which the machines do not possess.

Start doing Nothing. Start with Meditation.

Thank you for reading/listening to my Birthday rant.

See you on the other side.

I Love You. Jon @32

 The Four Agreements.

This came to me early this morning at 5.30 am to be exact.

This book on personal growth based on ancient Toltec wisdom, written by Don Miguel Ruiz was published in 1997.

It was on my list of spiritual or self-help books since 1999 when my journey into self began. I have acquired many books since but this one somehow eluded me. Until this morning when I awoke in bed, giving thanks for being able to wake and feel my limbs intact and mobile. It came in the form of an audio book so I promptly dived into it and barely into the first chapter, I found it warranted my full attention. So I got out of bed, went into the living room, sat in my reading chair and braced myself for over an hour of pure truths.

It has often been said that, the book finds you and not the other way around. I couldn't agree more and I am revelling in that saying. Better late than never. what's even better, this came at the crack of dawn on your birthday Jon.

In the days leading up to this one, one gets to ponder on exquisite questions like; what topics of discussion would we be indulging in? Or what advise would we be inspiring each other with?

Well, I need to ponder no more. The answers came to me fast and hard at the dawn of today.

As a reminder to self, here's a quick summary of the gift of The Four Agreements;

The backdrop is about limiting beliefs that we all have been "domesticated" since childhood that robs us of joy and create needless suffering.

To break the centuries old conditioning, we can practice three skills to free ourselves against  'domestication'

1. Awareness- Practice meditation and mindfulness.

2. Forgiveness- Awareness brings forgiveness

3. Action- From forgiveness we will receive the strength to act.

Then to break all our previous self-limiting agreements, start these new Four Agreements and completely change our lives:

First : "Be Impeccable with your word."

Say only the truth and only what you mean. first to yourself and to others.

Second: "Don't take anything personally."

Understand that others words are the product of their own domesticated lives.

Third: "Don't make assumptions"

Be brave to ask questions.

Fourth: " Always do your best"

Your best will change from moment to moment.

Come to think of it, you are the embodiment of the Four Agreements above, don't you think?

I am enjoying the present, moment to moment.

Thank you Jon. Happy Birthday.

Au Revoir.

I love you. Summer is Autumn in New York.

 Today is Summer's birthday.

As birthdays and summer go, they bring great Joy to everyone everywhere.

I had the precious joy of assembling a goodie bag of sorts, with a little help from my friends at the florist and work creating little bundles of delight.

Then the joy of discovery, after delivery of the unique combinations, that she's safely back at the big apple. Pursuing her heart's desire once again.

It seems like only a short while ago that I left the girl then perched atop Columbus Circle at The Mandarin Oriental overlooking Central Park in New York city. She had settled into dance school to begin her journey into music and drama at AMDA. That was six years ago.

It must have been a fabulous journey seeing where she is now. Back to doing what she loves doing most- Musical Theatre and Dance.

There is great joy revelling in that thought today.

Here's wishing you A Happy Birthday and Bon Voyage on yet another great adventure.

Just remember this; "Our ceiling is your floor" ~ Daughter (Venus-Sleeping at last)
And as you spread your joy, May you find Joy in everything you do.

I love you. Jon @31

 Knocking On Heaven's Door

That would be your anthem, among many of course. I chose this one because it reminds me of the mortality of the human form. The surety that as each of us is born we must each surely die. The best line thus far depicting and driving home this fact for me is encapsulated in this cheeky quote; “ do not get too serious with life, nobody gets out alive” So it is and was on that score( hmm.. I’m wondering if any great composer has a music score on that? Must check) that you, me and largely the conscious have come to live life.

I still remember back when you and your band chose to sing this song, I was a little disturbed but gave it no further thought as I marked Guns & Roses under the genre of heavy metal and hard rock. They’re meant to be rebellious and provocative and I had little interest in them.

However upon further introspection over time, this song holds much truth for living as much as it is about dying. We must come to terms with death before we can start living.

Originally composed by Bob Dylan for the Sam Peckinpah movie- Pat Garret and Billy the Kid, this song is one of the greatest soundtracks of our lives. It has since been covered by many artists including Eric Clapton and GnR. Peckinpah also made the epic western- The Wild Bunch, that revised the entire western genre with innovative storytelling, and real depictions of violence in his interpretations. His characters are mostly loners and losers who desire to be honourable but are forced to compromise in a world of injustice and brutality. He inspired many filmmakers notably John Woo, who framed most of his shots inspired by Peckinpah, who pioneered the slow motion action sequences and Woo became iconic for using those techniques in his movies.

The song was written to the lyrics depicting the movie, there's nothing to it.

Jon’s take was purely band and pop (rebel)culture driving the young of his time. It was after all 2004 and you were 14 and not much of a rebel. The oft repeated phrase keeps coming back in reprise. The rebuttal on my lips every time is;  aren’t we all, Knocking on Heaven’s door? Well you knocked and the door opened for you. You lucky bastard! Son of a Gan! I always see that cheeky grin of yours, it's a certain delightful knowing that it's all ok.

I suppose at 31 you’d know by now that we don't ever really die. We live on in each other even after we die.

Happy Birthday Son. It is all ok.

    K
    ubrick, Stanley

Kubrick, Stanley, (1928–99) American film director, writer, and producer, b. New York City. His visually stunning, thematically daring, boldly idiosyncratic, and darkly compelling films generally portray a deeply flawed humanity. Kubrick made several documentary shorts in the 1950s, turning to film noir features with Fear and Desire (1953), Killer's Kiss (1955), and The Killing (1956). He scored his first hit with the bleak antiwar drama Paths of Glory (1957). After completing the Roman epic Spartacus (1960), he left Hollywood (1961) to move to England. He soon made a series of brilliant films: the sexualized, sad, and uproariously comic Lolita (1962), the apocalyptic black comedy Dr. Strangelove (1964), the science-fiction classic 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and the violently futuristic A Clockwork Orange (1971). Kubrick's later films include Barry Lyndon (1975); The Shining (1987), a terrifying version of Stephen King's novel; the bitter Vietnam-era Full Metal Jacket (1987); and the psychosexual thriller Eyes Wide Shut (1999), his last film, called a masterpiece by some critics and a pretentious disappointment by others.

See biography by V. Lobrutto (1997); G. Phillips, Stanley Kubrick: A Film Odyssey (1975); T. A. Nelson, Kubrick: Inside a Film Artist's Maze (1982); M. Ciment, Kubrick (1983); N. Following their debut in London (1962), the group released its first single, ‘Come On’ (1963). Jagger's unconventional behaviour on stage, and the group's uninhibited lifestyles, cultivated a rebellious image which appealed to a generation of teenagers during the 1960s. He wrote and sang many of their hit singles including ‘The Last Time’ (1965), ‘I Can't Get No Satisfaction’ (1965), ‘Honky Tonk Woman’ (1969), and various albums.
